Spot report – Shinsho-ji Temple in Narita (2017-06-21)

Webmaster overnighted at Narita on his business trip last week, and had a short visit to Shinsho-ji Temple early in the morning before starting his duty.

Somon Gate at the entrance.

The second Niomon Gate can be seen from Somon Gate.

Niomon Gate.

After Niomon Gate, you can find a huge Great Main Hall (Dai-hondo) in the precincts.

The file of monks from the hall after (or during) religious ceremony

Three-story Pagoda with fine decoration. Can you see the heads of dragon?

Other impressive buildings in the precincts

Naritasan Park, a Japanese style garden, is behind of the temple. It’s huge and calm.

Colored carp are in the pond.

Narita Museum of Calligraphy (Naritasan-shodo-bijutsukan) is in a part of the garden. Now it’s closed for renovation until 1st September.

The food for carp is available for 200 yen at the museum shop if it’s open.

The approach to the temple from the railway station is also interesting. Local people maintain or try to rehabilitate the traditional atmosphere of the approach. Almost all shops were still closed because it was early in the morning when Webmaster walked.

Even the signboard of a convenience store on the street has a quiet color to harmonize with the environment of the approach.

Shinsho-ji Temple is very close to Narita Airport. If you have enough time at Narita, it is worthwhile visiting there.
